Help Assam Families Rebuild After the Floods

The 2026 floods — and the recovery that follows

The 2026 monsoon arrived with force. Prolonged heavy rain pushed rivers over their banks, and floodwater moved quickly through villages in Upper Assam. In districts including Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat, homes stood in water, courtyards disappeared, and families left with what they could carry.

Crops that were meant to feed households and pay debts were lost. Livestock drowned or had to be abandoned. Daily-wage work stopped. Schools closed or became unreachable. For thousands of families, the flood was not a single night of danger — it was the sudden collapse of the systems they depend on.

In many places the water is now falling back. What remains is the slow, expensive work of recovery: mud and silt inside houses, ruined stores of rice and seed, tools gone, small shops empty, children out of class, and older or disabled relatives who cannot rebuild a kitchen or a roof on their own.
